Back Step Talks - January 2022

On behalf of the Maryland Fire Chiefs Association's Safety and Health Committee, we wish everyone a very Happy New Year. These past two years have been tough on everyone with the increases in COVID illnesses and deaths. We hope that you and your family are doing well during this pandemic.

It is time to start 2022 on a healthy note. If your department participates in a routine physical program, you're off to a good start. If your department does not offer physicals, it is time to ask why not? Why send out that fire apparatus for routine maintenance but not take the same care of the department's most important asset - its members. There are options available to protect your health through routine health screening. Now is a good time to address them with your department.

Have you made your New Year's resolutions yet? Please consider including a resolution to get a health physical from your department or personal physician. Many times there are hidden dangers that our bodies don't tell us about until it is too late. A comprehensive physical exam may detect unknown problems with your health.

While we are at it, make a resolution to take better care of your health through attention to exercise and nutrition. Eating healthy and improving our physical condition can go a long way towards maintaining a healthy body.

Enjoy this month's newsletter. As always, the committee welcomes your input and feedback.

Be safe and be healthy !!! Our pledge for 2022 and the future.
